The Flow: Attention, Intention, Energy and Courage!

In my recent blog “5 Questions to ask yourself for 2021,” I outlined that every day is a powerful day and guess who holds the power? YOU! As you know, I am pretty obsessed with neuroscience and I always say where attention goes, energy flows and courage builds. When I wrote and published my book First Comes Courage during COVID, I didn’t know if I had it in me. Like many of us, 2020 was a year of many ups and downs, however I knew I had to set my intentions of being courageous as this is what I stand for and the impact I want to make. Remember, you are the director of your mind and thoughts and I want everyone to have powerful and courageous thoughts for a focus in 2021 (and beyond). If you have disempowering and fearful thoughts, and you focus on these, then you will have a pretty bad movie showing to the world. If you embrace the fear, this will drive courage and action. The mind is a powerful thing and the more you focus on something, the more you will see the data and evidence. Set your focus and intention to courage and being the best version of you. And, better questions give better answers! Here are 5 great questions to ask yourself EVERYDAY:

  • What do I really want and why?
  • Who do I want and choose to be and why?
  • What is stopping me being who I am and getting what I want?
  • What are my intention/s and where will be my focus today?
  • What action/s can I do today to be courageous (no matter how small)?

Underpinning all the above is KINDNESS. Remember to be kind to yourself and others. Focus on what makes you rock, who you are and what you want. Yes leadership is about others and how we can be kind and help others, however don’t compare yourself and your inner courage and successes with others.

“The first step to getting what you want is to have the courage to get rid of what you don’t.”Zig Ziglar

In turn, this self-awareness and intention will help you not only get to Courage and Leadership – also your purpose and impact as a person and leader. I want you to always reflect on your day and celebrate the small wins, successes and achievements. If you had a day of NON-Courage or UN-kindness for yourself then laugh at it and learn from it.

Maureen Metcalf, from the Forbes Coaches Council outlines “Leadership Trends for 2021 And Beyond.” Where there is disruption, there is an opportunity. Where there is a collapse, there is an evolutionary opportunity. As an interconnected global system, we are facing opportunities to address risks and create a more sustainable, just and fair future for more people. To create this future, leaders need to understand the current leadership trends as well as the overarching megatrends, which are:

  • Trend 1: Economic volatility impacting society and the workplace, increasing polarization on global sustainability, and social justice issues impacting international relations and local communities
  • Trend 2: Continued erosion of trust in societal institutions and a weakening of the principles that sustain those institutions
  • Trend 3: More complex global system optimization, including resilience, geopolitical impacts, social justice, etc.
  • Trend 4: Increased expectations to deliver results faster
  • Trend 5: Major shift in knowledge and skill requirements for both leaders and employees
  • Trend 6: Need to increase personal agility in all facets of life
  • Trend 7: More freedom to work where and how we want — and less privacy

We are living at a fantastic time in history. We have the opportunity to plot a future that is unlike our past. We can leave a legacy where future generations look back and see this time as a renaissance — when the foundation was laid to create a future better than many people living could imagine. A future where all of the world’s population has enough food and water. A future where human exploitation is an exception rather than a common occurrence. A future where people earn a living wage to provide for their families without relying on government assistance. A future where organizations balance robust financial rewards with creating healthier communities and societies. We have the power to make progress to co-create the future we envision — whatever that future is. I invite you to imagine the impact you want to see and work to create it.

Three Essential Leadership Skills for 2021

Melissa Daimler has outlined in Forbes “Three Leadership Skill Shifts For 2021 and beyond.” 2020 has brought us many crises but has also offered leaders numerous learning opportunities. It has demanded an evolution of how we work and what we learn. The shifts in these skills are subtle, but they will better equip leaders to lead, whether it’s remotely from the kitchen table in 2020 or in-person as we navigate toward a more hybrid office environment in 2021. The three skill shifts are:

  • Communication to Empathy
  • Emotional Intelligence to Emotional Agility
  • Time Management to Context Management
