Five Pillars of High-Performance Teams

Five Pillars of High-Performance Teams

For over 16 years, the team at LeadershipHQ have worked with hundreds of teams and leaders. We know what makes a great team through our work, research and thought leadership. We have built the Five Pillars of High-Performance Teams that we have delivered and created 100’s for great teams, and we know these stages have contributed to their success.

Let’s break down each of these elements:

1. Safety: Safety encompasses physical and psychological safety within the team environment. Physically safe environments minimise the risk of accidents or injuries, allowing team members to focus on their tasks without worrying about their well-being. Psychological safety is an atmosphere where team members feel comfortable taking interpersonal risks, such as speaking up with ideas, questions, or concerns, without fear of retribution or embarrassment. When team members feel psychologically safe, they are more likely to contribute openly, share innovative ideas, and engage in constructive conflict resolution. This fosters a culture of trust, collaboration, and learning within the team, ultimately leading to improved performance.

2. Connection: High-performance teams have solid interpersonal connections among team members. This connection fosters trust, open communication, and collaboration. Team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, concerns, and feedback, creating a more cohesive and productive working environment. They also know the importance of service. As Simon Sinek says in his YouTube video – the Navy SEALs aren’t made up of the strongest, most challenging, or most intelligent candidates. They all possess something much more profound. Service is what defines the highest-performing teams in the world.

3. Clarity refers to understanding team goals, roles, and expectations clearly. High-performance teams have well-defined objectives and a shared vision of their work. Each team member knows their role and understands how their contributions contribute to the team’s overall success.

4. Ownership is the sense of accountability and responsibility of team members towards their tasks and the team’s goals. In high-performance teams, members take ownership of their work and are committed to delivering high-quality results. They take initiative, problem-solve independently, and go above and beyond to ensure the team’s success.

5. Performance: Finally, high-performance teams consistently deliver excellent results. They set high standards for themselves and strive to improve their performance continuously. These teams can achieve outstanding outcomes through effective communication, collaboration, and focus on individual and collective goals.

In high-performance teams, safety is prioritised alongside connection, clarity, ownership, and performance. By creating an environment where team members feel safe to express themselves, take risks, and collaborate effectively, teams can achieve higher performance and success.
