And Protect Your Leadership
Not long ago, I was brought in to coach a senior leader whose team was on the verge of collapse. The complaints were almost unanimous:
- He was moody and reactive.
- His decisions shifted from one day to the next.
- He checked in obsessively, questioning every task.
- He seemed more concerned about power and control than about people.
The team felt defeated. Productivity had dropped. And trust? Non-existent.
At first, this leader pushed back. He didn’t think there was an issue. But as we worked together, the truth came out: behind all the behaviour was fear. Fear of being irrelevant, fear of losing control, fear of being seen as “not enough.”
Once he recognised that fear was driving him, he began to shift. Slowly, he learned to let go of the grip, listen, and trust his people. Over time, he turned from a source of stress into someone who could create stability for his team.
That’s when I started naming this leadership style for what it was: TUMP leadership.
What is a TUMP Boss?
A TUMP boss is:
- Temperamental – quick to react, easily frustrated, mood swings that ripple across the team.
- Unpredictable – decisions and directions can change daily, leaving employees anxious and second-guessing.
- Micromanaging – unable to trust others fully, always checking, reviewing, and questioning.
- Power Hungry – focused on authority, recognition, and being in control, sometimes at the expense of the team.
If you’ve worked for one, you know how draining it can be. Walking on eggshells becomes normal. Your confidence takes a hit. And you start to doubt your own leadership potential.
But here’s the key: you are not powerless, even if your boss is TUMP.
Survival Strategies for Working With a TUMP Boss
Here are five practical strategies I’ve seen work, both personally and with clients:
1. Anchor Yourself in Calm
When a boss is temperamental, it’s easy to mirror their mood. Resist that pull. Show up calm, consistent, and professional. Your steadiness can actually defuse their volatility.
2. Document Everything
Unpredictable bosses thrive in vagueness. Protect yourself with clarity. Write down decisions, send follow-up emails, and keep records. This not only safeguards you but also helps keep projects on track.
3. Pre-Empt the Micromanagement
TUMP bosses crave control. Feed that need proactively. Send updates before they ask. Share short summaries of your progress. Paradoxically, when they feel informed, they often step back.
4. Align With Their Goals Without Losing Yourself
Power-hungry bosses want to see outcomes that make them look successful. Position your work in terms of results they value — but never compromise your integrity or values. Strategic alignment is different from pandering.
5. Protect Your Energy and Boundaries
This is non-negotiable. Learn when to align, when to push back, and when to step away. Managing up doesn’t mean surrendering yourself — it means navigating wisely while keeping your sense of self intact.
Flip TUMP for Yourself
I often encourage people to reframe TUMP as a leadership compass for themselves:
- Take control of your reactions
- Uphold your boundaries
- Move with intention
- Protect your integrity
Because the truth is, your leadership is not defined by the boss you work for. It’s defined by how you choose to show up in difficult environments.
Final Thought
If you’re working with a TUMP boss, know this: you’re not alone, and you’re not stuck. With the right strategies, you can not only survive; you can grow stronger, more resilient, and more grounded in your own leadership.
And if you are a leader reading this and recognising yourself in these words? That’s your invitation. Courageous leadership isn’t about control; it’s about trust, empowerment, and showing up with integrity.
