By 2030, nearly two-thirds of Australian jobs will be highly skilled and require a combination of hard and soft skills. That’s a massive shift from the year 2000, when only half of roles relied heavily on human capabilities, such as communication, problem-solving, resilience, and creativity. These soft-skill-intensive roles are also growing at a rate 2.5 times faster than others.
That’s not my opinion. That’s from reports by Deloitte and CSIRO.
Why? Because while companies can invest in the latest tech, they can’t “buy” trust. They can’t “install” courage. They can’t “automate” empathy. These skills are human. And they’re what make leaders unforgettable.
What Australian Employers Are Saying
We often assume that if you’ve got the degree, the technical know-how, or the coding chops, you’re job-ready. But Australian employers are telling a different story.
Research shows that up to 90% of graduates possess the technical skills, but still fall short in other areas. Why? They lack the leadership, adaptability, and interpersonal skills needed to thrive in a team and navigate change.
In fact, within the Australian Public Service, employers identified soft skills as their biggest gap—nearly double the concern compared to technical knowledge. The most critical ones? Communication, adaptability, empathy, creative thinking, and problem-solving.
Hybrid Work Has Changed the Game
Hybrid work isn’t a passing trend—it’s here to stay. Over 80% of Australian employers expect hybrid setups to remain steady or grow. But here’s the catch: more than half of employees report feeling disconnected.
That’s where leadership makes the difference. Leaders who can build trust, create psychological safety, and keep people engaged are the glue that holds hybrid teams together. Without those human skills, technology can’t fill the gap.
Why Human-Centred Leadership Wins
Let’s zoom out. Globally, LinkedIn’s 2024 Workplace Report found that 76% of companies say soft skills are just as critical, if not more important, than technical ones.
Deloitte’s research goes even further: organisations with strong human-centred leadership are 2.4 times more likely to hit financial targets and 3.1 times more likely to engage and retain top talent.
In other words: people follow people, not platforms.
The Real Superpower: Humanity
AI can process data, but it can’t build culture. It can design algorithms, but it can’t stand in front of a team and say, “I’ve got your back.” It can generate answers, but it can’t generate trust.
